The Complete Works produced a crackin’ good range of Wallace and Gromit books – sticker activity, wipe clean and colouring. We tried to keep the brand’s essence with these books and encouraged lots of imagination, creativity and fun with each activity.
When the first Wallace and Gromit film, A Grand Day Out, was released, the characters of Wallace and Gromit were fully formed, just as you see them now, but Nick Park, who created them while still a student, initially gave Wallace a moustache and no eyebrows and Gromit had a mouth and a voice – and was a cat! As with a lot of creative work, the characters evolved in the early stages of production and the animators found that a dog was much easier to model than a cat.
This is how The Complete Works looks at every commissioned title we work on. We eagerly take on a brief and show the Publishers any part, or all stages of the book's life cycle and are happy to take on publishers’ comments throughout the creative process through to delivering the final files.
With two hugely successful feature-length films under his belt and another in the works, Sonic shows no signs of retiring. What was originally just a videogame for Japanese company, Sega, has now become a multi-million-pound international super-brand, acclaimed for its licenced characters, comics and toys, video games and books. Which is where The Complete Works comes in.
We created a whole array of formats for Sonic, such as the Adventure Gamebooks. These books give readers two-page numbers to turn to, depending on how they solve the puzzle (or activity) on every spread.
Other titles in the series included a giant poster book, colouring books and story books.
The Complete Works conjured up Mickey’s Christmas Fun, a Disney-licensed activity book.
The story running through the book tells of Mickey and Minnie Mouse planning a big Christmas party for all their friends – Donald Duck, Daisy, Goofy and Pluto. The book is full of fun activities, puzzles, colouring pages and lots of make-and-do elements.
When The Complete Works created some Beano books, we used the original comic artists to keep the books as authentic as possible.
The extensive range included Sticker Activity Books, Joke Books and Story Books, which went on to become audio versions with Julie Walters as the narrator.
